Description

OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE

The 1970 Plymouth ’Cuda AAR was a one-year-only homologation special built to qualify Plymouth for the SCCA Trans-Am racing series. Its name honored Dan Gurney’s All American Racers (AAR) team, which campaigned factory-backed Barracudas in Trans-Am alongside Dodge Challenger T/As. To meet SCCA rules, Plymouth produced 2,724 AAR ’Cudas during a brief five-week run in March and April 1970.

The AAR was engineered for road racing, featuring a 340-cubic-inch V8 topped with three Holley two-barrel carburetors—the famous “Six Barrel” setup—rated at 290 horsepower. The engine included reinforced block webs, an aluminum intake, and unique heads for durability and performance. A four-speed manual or TorqueFlite automatic paired with a Sure-Grip differential completed the drivetrain.

Distinctive styling set the AAR apart: a fiberglass hood with functional scoop, matte-black accents, bold strobe stripes, and a ducktail rear spoiler. Side-exiting exhausts and staggered Goodyear Polyglas tires (wider in the rear) gave it an aggressive stance — the first Detroit production car with mismatched tire sizes. As Car and Driver (July 1970) reported, “The AAR ’Cuda is a street fighter with a race car’s attitude. It’s loud, raw, and unapologetic — built for the Trans-Am wars, not for Sunday drives.” And this AAR is finished in popular “Lemon Twist” yellow as from the factory.
