Description

Spawned from Mercury’s small-size line, the Cyclone began as a trim level for the popular Mercury Comet. For the second generation of the Cyclone, it stood on its own as Mercury’s answer to the full-size performance luxury cars offered by their competitors and the third generation would cement its reputation for performance by crushing the competition on NASCAR’s superspeedways. That embarrassing record of beating its Ford Torino cousins in NASCAR continued in the new fourth-generation Cyclone introduced in 1970, which would power Mercury to numerous NASCAR superspeedway victories well into the 1970s.

Despite their success on the racetrack, just 1,631 Cyclone Spoilers were built in 1970, all packing Ford’s top 429 Cobra Jet engine with ram air induction, and only 865 optioned with the four-speed “Toploader” manual transmission, like this recently restored example. With 370 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque Motor Trend noted in September 1969, “Mercury's wings take the form of a black front spoiler under the front bumper to help reduce front-end lift and a rear spoiler on the deck to increase rear-wheel traction. If you can do 140 mph without a ticket, you'll find the car stays flat.”
