Description
“The performance starts as you’re seated.” The 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle is considered by many to be one of the best-looking muscle cars ever built in Detroit, owing in part to its freshly redesigned sheet metal, which gave the car a more curvaceous and sporting appearance. The second-generation Chevelle also offered a powerful punch to back up those good looks. How popular was the ’70 Chevelle SS? For the second year in a row it was Detroit’s most popular muscle car, having dethroned the pioneering Pontiac GTO in 1969.
While many buyers chose the familiar SS 396 model, the new SS 454 versions made the headlines in 360-hp LS5 or mind-altering 450-hp LS6 form. More than just gargantuan horsepower, the LS6 generated earthquaking torque—500 lb-ft. Yet around town Hot Rod magazine (May 1970) was amazed, writing, “The 454 operates smoothly in congested traffic, and its handling is as good as other GM intermediates.” But when provoked the quarter mile flew by in 13.44 seconds. Hot Rod prophetically concluded, “The future may never see a car like this. It is one of the brutes, and all it needs is a way of staying in contact with terra firma.”
