Description
“The Road Runner’s styling, combined with low price and high performance, earned the model the coveted Car of the Year award.” So wrote Motor Trend magazine in their 1969 Car of the Year issue. Introduced in 1968 as a no-frills, high-performance vehicle aimed at younger buyers, the Road Runner quickly gained popularity for its affordability and raw power.
In 1969, Plymouth expanded the lineup to include a convertible version, offering open-air thrills alongside its trademark performance. The 1969 model featured subtle styling updates, including a new grille and taillights, while retaining the bold “beep-beep” horn inspired by the Warner Bros. cartoon character. The convertible featured that rare combination of muscle car aggression with a touch of cruising elegance.
Only 2,128 Road Runner Convertibles were produced in 1969, making them highly collectible today. Standard power came from a 383 cubic inch V8 engine, but buyers could opt for the legendary 426 HEMI, though only 10 convertibles were factory-equipped with this engine. This stock-looking Road Runner is not one of those factory HEMI ragtops; instead, it was treated to a modern Gen3 5.7-liter HEMI engine, four-wheel power disc brakes, Classic Auto Air air conditioning, and other contemporary touches.
