Description

The iconic Ford Mustang, brainchild of Lee Iacocca, was a brilliant combination of Ford Falcon underpinnings and a long-hood, short-deck design that still draws plenty of attention. Iacocca, who chose “Mustang” over the planned name “Cougar” because “it had the excitement of wide-open spaces,” aimed to build a car that cost $2,500, weighed 2,500 pounds, and could carry four people. He succeeded, as a base six-cylinder hardtop coupe with three-speed manual gearbox cost $2,320 (the convertible cost a bit more). The Mustang was the most successful new car launch in history.

In 1969, Ford redesigned the Mustang, resulting in a larger vehicle with muscular styling. The body was lengthened by 3.8 inches and widened by almost half an inch, while the wheelbase remained the same at 108 inches. The 1969 model year also marked the first inclusion of quad headlamps inside and outside the grille opening. The traditional corralled grille pony was replaced with an off-center pony and tribars logo, and the car featured convex side panels replacing the concave ones. Naturally, this newly restyled and revised Mustang, like this Lime Gold convertible, was popular with buyers in 1969, with over 300,000 sold.
