Description

To the uniformed, 1960s Datsun roadsters seem to be Japanese copies of the MGB, but the Datsun Fairlady (as it is known in Japan) pre-dated the introduction of the MGB by several months, meaning any styling similarities are coincidental. And while the performance of the MGB began to slide downward post-1967, the opposite was true of the Datsun.

Datsun began selling its 1600 model in the U.S. in 1965, and the roadster quickly gained popularity among American driving enthusiasts. The second-generation 1969 Datsun 1600 — with its long hood and short rear deck, and a well-appointed interior that included comfortable bucket seats and a driver-focused instrument cluster — offered a stylish alternative to its European MG and Triumph competitors.

Power was supplied by a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine that produced 96 horsepower, mated to a four-speed manual transmission. This engine, combined with a lightweight body and advanced suspension, provided excellent handling and performance for its time. The car also featured front disc brakes, which were a significant upgrade from the drum brakes used in earlier models.

Approximately 2,500 models were imported to the U.S. in 1969, and the 1600’s success helped pave the way for future Nissan sports cars, including the iconic Z-car series.
