Description

Under the leadership of John Z. DeLorean at Chevrolet, the muscle car wars reached a fever pitch in 1969. This period witnessed an unprecedented array of performance options for various Chevrolet models including Camaros, Chevelles, Impalas, and Novas. The 1968 Chevy Nova maintained its two-model lineup, offering both a two-door coupe and a four-door sedan, with three distinct trim levels designated as 111, 113, and 114. The base engine options ranged from a 90 horsepower four-cylinder to a 200 horsepower 307 cu-in V8. However, for enthusiasts seeking greater power, the Nova SS variant provided the option to upgrade to either 350 or 375 horsepower versions of the big-block 396 V8.

Don Yenko, whose Chevrolet dealership in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania famously built 427-powered Camaros and Chevelles by exploiting the little-known factory "Central Office Production Order" (COPO) program, took the initiative to modify a series of third-generation Novas to rival the leading Ford Mustangs, Plymouth Barracudas, and Dodge Challengers. One notable creation was the specially modified Nova, sometimes dubbed the "Yenko Supernova," featuring reinforced body frames and suspension systems capable of accommodating the potent 427 “L72” cu-in V8 engine. It's estimated that only 37 of these vehicles were originally produced, with several more Nova Super Sports modified with 427 engine swaps and cosmetic upgrades to have a Yenko Supernova appearance like the exacting tribute presented here.
