Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
Introduced in 1968, the Plymouth Road Runner was Chrysler’s answer to the growing muscle car market, emphasizing affordability and raw performance. Based on the mid-size Belvedere platform, the Road Runner stripped away luxury features to keep costs and weight low, appealing to younger buyers who wanted speed without frills. Plymouth licensed the Warner Bros. cartoon character for its name and even featured the now famous purple “meep-meep” horn. Standard power came from a 383-cubic-inch V8 producing 335 horsepower, paired with heavy-duty suspension and drivetrain components. With a base price under $3,000, the Road Runner delivered quarter-mile thrills for few bills, helping Plymouth sell over 44,000 units in its debut year.
Motor Trend (Dec. 1967) called it “The simplest, starkest, most brazenly pure non-compromising super car in history.” Painted a dark color with plain wheels these birds of prey were the picture of stealth, but this restored Road Runner has been repainted 1971 “Sassy Grass Green” (J6) that is just plain in your face. It displays 35,090 miles that are believed original, is equipped with TorqueFlite automatic transmission, Magnum 500-style wheels, redline tires, plus rare factory air conditioning. As the Road Runner brochure stated that year, “The Plymouth Win-You-Over Beat Goes On.”
