Description

Introduced in 1940 by the Lincoln division of Ford Motor Company, the Continental was originally a custom-built personal car for Edsel Ford, who wanted a stylish European-inspired vehicle. Its elegant design and long, low profile quickly gained attention, prompting Lincoln to put it into production.

After a hiatus during World War II, the Continental returned in 1946 and evolved through the 1950s and ’60s into a symbol of American luxury. The fourth-generation 1961 Lincoln Continental, designed by Elwood Engel after his promising 1961 Ford Thunderbird concept, featured clean lines and rear-hinged “suicide doors.” It became a design classic and was famously used as the presidential limousine for John F. Kennedy. The Continental underwent a second mid-cycle redesign in 1966, offering a four-door convertible and two-door pillarless hardtop to compete against the Cadillac Coupe de Ville and Imperial Crown Coupe.

This 1967 Lincoln Continental marks the final year that a four-door convertible with suicide doors was offered for sale and is one of just 2,276 sold. It cements the legacy of the Continental as the most popular four-door convertible sold after World War II, as well as the final example of its type sold by an American manufacturer.
