Description
In 1960, the Ranchero was redesigned and downsized to be based on Ford's compact Falcon, particularly the two-door sedan delivery variant. The economic situation of the late 1950s saw an increase in the demand for small, economical cars like the Volkswagen Beetle, which brought about a change in the mindset of the "Big Three" automakers. This led to the introduction of the Ford Falcon, Chevrolet Corvair, and Plymouth Valiant. The Volkswagen Bus also had a pickup version, while a van based on the Chevrolet Corvair was also offered for added utility. Ford believed that the market needed a more practical vehicle, one that was much smaller, lighter, and cheaper than a full-size pickup truck. The new Ranchero, marketed in print as the "Falcon Ranchero," was well-received by buyers. A range of engine and transmission options, along with an 800-pound payload, ensure a practical and stylish alternative to traditional full-sized pickup trucks.
