Description
Road & Track magazine stated in 1963, “As a purely sporting car, the new Corvette will know few peers on road or track.”
The 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray marked one of the most dramatic transformations in the model’s history. Designed by Larry Shinoda under Bill Mitchell’s direction, the new Sting Ray introduced a sharper, aerodynamic profile with hidden headlights and the iconic divided rear window, a styling flourish Mitchell championed despite internal resistance. Though visually striking, the split rear glass was eliminated after a single year.
While various 327ci V8s were offered, at the heart of this Split Window Coupe is Chevrolet’s high‑performance L76 small‑block V8, which has been documented as numbers-matching. Rated at 340 horsepower, it was the most powerful carbureted powerplant from the factory that year and features a high‑lift solid‑lifter camshaft, 11.0:1 compression ratio, and a four‑barrel carburetor, backed by an Borg-Warner T-10 four-speed manual transmission. Paired with the Sting Ray’s new chassis featuring four‑wheel independent suspension, the 1963 L76 Corvette truly knew few peers when new.
Sold new at Earl Hayes Chevrolet in Dallas, Texas, this Daytona Blue 1963 L76 Split Window has amassed the highest accolades of the Corvette world: the NCRS Top Flight Award, Bloomington Gold Certification, and the Chevy/Vettefest Gold Spinner Award, thus earning the Triple Crown Award from the Triple Crown Registry.
This 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray Coupe 327/340 is now offered by the selling dealer in North Carolina with an NCRS Top Flight award, a Bloomington Gold Certification, a Chevy/Vettefest Nationals Gold Spinner award, an NCRS Shipping Data Report, a window sticker and invoice, and a clean Virginia title.
