Description

Volkswagen called its Type 1 Beetle the “small wonder.” Originally known as the “people’s car” — the English translation of Volkswagen —the Type 1 is a global icon, recognized by various other nicknames around the world, such as Käfer, Vocho, Coccinelle, Fusca, Maggiolino, and of course, the Beetle. Following its entry into serial production after World War II, it achieved the status of the best-selling car based on a single platform, with 21.5 million units sold.

This compact and practical vehicle exemplified innovation and design, characterized by its distinctive rounded shape, which was both aerodynamic and visually striking. With its rear-mounted, air-cooled engine mated directly to the transaxle, a 94.5-inch wheelbase, and independent front suspension and swing axle rear suspension, the Beetle sold in hundreds of thousands in the United States throughout the 1960s.

This 1962 Beetle is graced with the optional canvas sunroof, which the ’62 Volkswagen brochure stated is like the standard sedan “except for its slide-back top, which adjusts easily, even while you are driving.” It is said to be a California car and features a 1,835cc crate engine. The four-speed manual 002 transaxle has been upgraded with an “open-road friendly” 4.57 Freeway Flyer final drive from Rancho Transaxles.
