Description
The 1960 Lola Mk1 was a pivotal sports racing car that marked the beginning of Lola Cars' legacy in motorsport. Designed by Eric Broadley and introduced in 1958, the Mk1 featured a lightweight steel or fiberglass tubular spaceframe chassis, clothed in sleek aluminum bodywork crafted by Maurice Gomm. Powered by a front-mounted 1,098cc Coventry Climax FWA inline-four engine producing 80 horsepower, it was paired with a Colotti Tipo 37 four-speed manual transmission. Weighing just 812-840 pounds, the Mk1 was agile and competitive.
Its racing pedigree was quickly established when it won its class at the 1960 12 Hours of Sebring, driven by Charles Vögele and Peter Ashdown. The Mk1’s success helped Lola gain recognition as a serious contender in the racing world, and between 38 and 42 units were believed to have been built, most with fiberglass bodies molded from Gomm’s design. The Lola Mk1 laid the foundation for future Lola innovations, including victories in the Indianapolis 500 and class wins in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
With so few Lola Mk1 produced, and still fewer surviving, this Mk1 is a highly accurate re-creation crafted for vintage racing. The body was reproduced using molds taken from a Lola Mk1 owned by the consignor’s father, and the spaceframe was fabricated using measurements taken from another Mk1 chassis. This is a unique opportunity to pilot a landmark racing vehicle, free from the concern of compromising a treasured historical piece.

Ownership History
The consignor of this Lola Mk1 Reproduction states, “The body was reproduced using molds taken from a Lola Mk1 owned by my father, and the spaceframe was fabricated from steel tubing and aluminum sheet using measurements taken from a different chassis. The car was then painted in blue and white with No. 17 roundels. Details include a vented front clamshell, a wraparound acrylic windscreen, a driver’s headrest fairing, a roll hoop, and a Raydot-style side mirror.”
“Minilite-style 15-inch alloy wheels are wrapped in 5.00-inch Dunlop Racing tires that I recommend replacing. The independent suspension features adjustable coilovers at all four corners, and braking is handled by four-wheel discs that are inboard mounted out back.”
“The right-hand-drive cockpit houses bomber-style seats with gray covers and blue G-Force harnesses that have expired. A fire suppression system has been installed. The Sparco steering wheel is mounted to a quick-release hub and sits ahead of a Mallory tachometer as well as gauges for air/fuel ratio, oil pressure, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The car is not equipped with an odometer.”
“The Ford Kent inline-four was bored 0.080-inch over to a displacement of 1,575cc during a 2010 rebuild at The Automotive Archeologists of Rogersville, Missouri. The engine was rebuilt again in 2014 using a Moldex billet crankshaft and a 244-duration camshaft.”
“The Lola has been accepted by most of the vintage racing associations and was raced all over the country. If you have been involved in vintage racing, you have seen this car and know of the driver.”
