Description

OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE

Nineteen fifty-nine was a monumental year for Rolls-Royce and Bentley motor cars. In October, it was announced that the Series 2 would replace the Series 1, featuring a newly developed V8 engine. It was determined that the six-cylinder was at its peak of development and was no longer competitive with the increasing pressure from their competitors' smooth and powerful V8 offerings. Their new engine displaced 6.2 liters and used innovative aluminum alloy for both the cylinder block and heads with overhead camshafts and hydraulic tappets. The new engine proved to be incredibly smooth and quiet, allowing for the basic design to be improved upon for years to come. This allowed Bentley to continue the tradition of crafting “The Silent Sports Car,” or regal sedans capable of covering vast distances in both speed and comfort.

This car is part of the George Foreman Collection, which comprises over 50 cars from the 1930s through today, with a focus on American classics and late-model sports cars.

Known Imperfections

  • Please note that the vehicles in The George Foreman Collection have been in long-term static storage and will benefit from additional mechanical attention prior to being driven. Bidders are encouraged to review the Additional Documents section of each lot for any recent mechanical service rendered to help return certain vehicles to running condition. Additionally, bidders should carefully review the photos of each lot in the collection, which may highlight the oxidation of metal components certain vehicles sustained as the result of a garage fire caused by a golf cart battery in March 2019. Although none of the vehicles sustained fire damage from the fire itself, the negative cosmetic effects of the corrosive soot vary greatly from vehicle to vehicle and can be observed in the photo

Ownership History

Miss Ruth H. Dorn of Bradford, Pennsylvania, ordered this 1960 Bentley S2 through J.S. Inskip of New York, the territory representative of Rolls-Royce Inc. of New York. The car was delivered to the Liverpool doc on 12 November 1960, where it boarded the SS Sylvania destined for New York, with Miss Dorn taking delivery shortly before Christmas on 21 December 1960. The car was offered for sale in the Rolls-Royce Owner's Club classifieds in January 1993 in Houston, Texas, at which time the car was already restored to its present color combination. As a member of The George Foreman Collection, this 1960 Bentley S2 Long Wheelbase Park Ward Saloon is presented as a handsome and dignified example worthy of continued preservation.
