Description
Introduced in 1955 as a stylish, Italian‑designed alternative to Volkswagen's utilitarian Beetle, the Karmann Ghia blended VW's engineering, Carrozzeria Ghia styling, and Karmann’s hand‑built craftsmanship. The result is a sleek coupe with distinctive European character.
Early production Karmann Ghias became known as “Lowlight” models, defined by their lower-set headlights, smaller taillights, narrow front grille, and unique early dashboard design. By the late 1950s, demand for the Karmann Ghia had grown far beyond Volkswagen’s expectations, establishing it as a lasting symbol of mid-century automotive style.
Built on December 19, 1958, this 1959 example was produced for the Canadian market and was reportedly parked in the 1970s. Purchased in 2012 under previous ownership as a non-running project, this Ghia was subsequently refurbished, with the process documented through photos and forum postings. The seller reportedly replaced the steering box and performed an oil change and tune-up in preparation for the sale.
This 1959 Karmann Ghia is now offered with a copy of the Stiftung AutoMuseum Volkswagen Zertifikat, spare parts, and a clean Washington State title in the seller’s name.
