Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
Upon its introduction in 1957, the Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner was the first four-seater convertible to feature a servo-operated metal folding hardtop – a feature that Ford spent an estimated $2 million dollars to develop. The retractable mechanism could be raised or lowered in under a minute and boasted impressive reliability, but came at nearly twice the cost of the baseline Ford sedan. Mid-way through the 1959 model year, the Galaxie trim level assumed the Fairlane 500’s top position in the lineup with some 1959 models carrying both Fairlane 500 and Galaxie badging. New Galaxie models featured a Thunderbird-inspired roofline and C-pillar design with a chrome-framed rear window. Only 12,915 Skyliners were produced in 1959, the final model year, and are now highly sought after for the unrivaled spectacle of their top mechanism in operation.
