Description

“The Automobile is the Art.” For William “Red” Lewis, a native of Green Bay, Wisconsin, generosity with his hometown was natural. A successful and innovative entrepreneur who took the concept of the touch-free car wash and turned it into a worldwide success story, Lewis purchased a cavernous empty downtown building, reviving it as The Automobile Gallery & Event Center, which opened on 1 January 2016. That building was originally home to Denil Cadillac, a mid-century architectural gem that when it opened in 1959; so advanced General Motors used it as the model for Cadillac dealerships throughout the United States. Now to make room for its expanding and constantly evolving exhibits, Hagerty Marketplace is honored to offer these museum-quality vehicles from The Automobile Gallery & Event Center.

“Buicks so new even the names had to be new,” proclaimed Buick Division’s brochure for 1959. Gone was the Roadmaster and Special of the past, LeSabre, Invicta and Electra were the future. The top-of-the-line Electra 225 was an imposing sight, with a “wing” theme to the canted front headlights, finned rear design, and every luxury and comfort item imaginable for the era. The 401 cu-in “Wildcat” V8 generated 325 horsepower and a stout 445 lb-ft of torque through a two-speed “Twin Turbine” automatic transmission.

But a compelling and rarely seen Buick was the model 4737 Electra Hardtop Coupe. Built on the Electra platform that was five inches shorter than the Electra 225, it featured the same powertrain and luxurious interior of the 225 models. It also featured a special hardtop body, with overall height four inches lower than any other Buick that year. “One of the lowest, most beautifully styled cars on the road this year, this new 1959 Buick Electra Hardtop Coupe has an amazing glass area for a 2 Door model… over 5,009 square inches,” bragged Buick.

Dramatically bold and quite uncommon, this 1959 Buick Electra Hardtop Coupe is a highlight of The Automobile Gallery & Event Center.
