Description

OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE

After all the fuss that’s been made over the elegant 1957 Chevrolets, the success of the 1958 models has been rather overlooked. While Chevrolet and Ford were neck-and-neck for number one in '57, Chevrolet was a clear winner in 1958, selling 1,255,935 cars — almost half of which came from the luxury Bel Air line.

The 1958 Chevrolet Bel Air owed nothing to the previous year, from its four-headlight setup to its rolled and lowered rear fins and a completely new X-frame beneath all-new bodywork. The wheelbase was extended by two inches, coil springs were now used all around, and the base 283 cu-in V-8 engine with a two-barrel carburetor produced 185 horsepower.

Chevrolets were divided into the basic Del Ray, mid-level Biscayne, and luxury Bel Air series, which is known for its enthusiastic use of fancy trim. All V8 Bel Air models had “V” emblems front and back, and side trim ran mid-level and full-length with a “spear” at the front. There were four chevrons on the front fenders, four vertical chrome strips on the lower rear fender bulges, and front fender-top ornaments.

This VIN of this ‘58 decodes as a Biscayne, but Bel Air trim has been added inside and out.
