The Salmson 2300S, produced from 1953 to 1957, represents the final chapter of the French manufacturer Salmson’s automobile history. Originally founded by engineer Émile Salmson, the company began in the late 19th century producing pumps and later became a significant builder of aircraft engines and aircraft during World War I before expanding into automobiles in 1919.

The 2300S embodied Salmson’s long-standing commitment to engineering innovation. The company had pioneered the use of double overhead camshaft (DOHC) engines as early as 1922, a tradition that continued with the 2300S’s advanced twin‑cam four‑cylinder powerplant. Introduced in 1953, the model featured elegant coachwork by Esclassan and Henri Chapron, and was known for its refined road manners and capable performance, including a top speed of about 112 mph.

Salmson positioned the 2300S as both a sporting road car and a competitive machine. One example entered the 1956 24 Hours of Le Mans, demonstrating the model’s capabilities on the international stage. However, high postwar taxes on larger engines and slow sales—only 217 units were produced—led to the company’s financial decline. Salmson ceased automobile production in 1957, making the 2300S its final and most sophisticated road car.
