“It costs so little to move up to Mercury!” announced the 1953 ad campaign Ford launched, promoting its Monterey line to the public. The redesigned product lined would be complimented by Mercury’s other notable ad campaign that year, “Take a good look at the most forward-looking design of 1953.”
Alongside Ford, the Mercury line also received a complete redesign heading into the 1952 model year. Mercury cars now sported a taller, square shape with a larger greenhouse, curved windshield, and an entirely new grille and brightwork were employed. The Monterey, which was introduced in 1950 as a body style in the Mercury Eight series, became its own model in 1952 positioned above the Custom nameplate. A convertible and sedan joined the popular hardtop coupe, with all initially being powered by the Ford Flathead V8 producing 125 horsepower. Mid-1950s Montereys remain a popular choice among collectors for their modest proportions compared to later years, nice period color schemes, and easy everyday drivability.
This top-of-the-line Monterey was proudly owned by a private owner for 58 years, as she reportedly loved the Banff Blue with a Super Blue Metallic top finish. This example was fully optioned with Merc-O-Matic transmission, power accessories, wheel covers, whitewall tires, chrome bumper grille guard and AM radio.
