Ford’s first true post-war design emerged in July 1948 and was quickly nicknamed the “Shoebox Ford” for its slab-sided pontoon fenders. The new Ford was available with an inline-six or a Flathead V8 engine in a range of body styles, returning Ford to first place in sales among American manufacturers. The following model year boasted “50 Ways New For ‘50,” with changes mostly encompassing new exterior trim and a crest emblem that would remain on full-size models for the next four decades. Today, 1949-1951 Fords are beloved for their trailblazing design and remain charming weekend cruisers.
