The 1950 Cadillac Fleetwood Series Sixty Special marked a pivotal moment in Cadillac’s postwar evolution. Introduced as the fourth generation of the Sixty Special line, it featured a shorter 130-inch wheelbase compared to its predecessors, yet retained the elegance and prestige associated with the Fleetwood name. Powered by Cadillac’s new 331 cubic-inch overhead valve V8 engine—first introduced in 1949 — it delivered 160 horsepower and was paired with a four-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission, replacing the earlier manual gearbox.
Stylistically, the 1950 model shared exterior cues with the more affordable Series 62 but distinguished itself with a more luxurious and refined interior. Other Cadillac’s had mass-produced Body by Fisher assemblies, but Fleetwood’s workmanship was evident in the upscale materials and handcrafted attention to detail, making the Sixty Special a favorite among discerning buyers. That year, Cadillac achieved a milestone by selling over 100,000 vehicles for the first time, with 13,755 of those being Sixty Specials.
The 1950 Cadillac dealer brochure captured the essence of this special automobile: “The Fleetwood Sixty Special is distinguished by its exclusive styling, luxurious appointments, and the unmistakable dignity of Cadillac.”
