Description

OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE

The 1949 Willys CJ-2A was the first mass-produced Jeep designed for civilian use after World War II. Introduced in 1945 and produced until 1949, the CJ-2A—short for “Civilian Jeep”—was marketed as the “Universal Jeep,” emphasizing its versatility for farm, industrial, and recreational purposes. It evolved from the wartime Willys MB, but incorporated features tailored for peacetime needs, such as a tailgate, larger headlights, and a higher windshield. These changes made it more practical for everyday use while retaining the rugged durability that made the military Jeep famous.

Powered by the reliable 134-cubic-inch “Go-Devil” L-head four-cylinder engine, the CJ-2A delivered about 60 horsepower and featured a part-time four-wheel-drive system with high and low ranges, making it ideal for off-road and agricultural work. Its simple, open-body design allowed for easy maintenance and adaptability, and it could be fitted with various farm implements, reinforcing its role as a workhorse for rural America.

The CJ-2A laid the foundation for the Jeep brand’s civilian success and is widely regarded as a precursor to the modern SUV. By the time production ended in 1949, it had cemented Jeep’s reputation as a durable, go-anywhere vehicle for both work and leisure.
