Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
The 1931 Hanomag 3/16 Coupe emerged during a transformative era for Germany’s Hannoversche Maschinenbau AG, better known as Hanomag, a company that began building locomotives in 1835 before expanding into trucks, tractors, and eventually passenger cars. By the late 1920s and early 1930s, Hanomag sought to deliver small, efficient automobiles for a changing European market.
The 3/16 Coupe represented the company’s push toward practical yet charming personal transport. Powered by an approximately 1,000cc L‑head inline four‑cylinder engine producing 16 horsepower, the lightweight coupe provided modest but reliable performance—perfect for everyday motoring in pre‑war Germany. Despite its utilitarian roots, the 3/16 carried thoughtful design touches: disc wheels, windshield‑post signal semaphores, an adjustable windshield visor, and the distinctive Hanomag horse radiator mascot. But its most notable feature was the full‑length folding canvas roof, enabling the transition from closed coupe to open‑air motoring with surprising elegance.
Though produced in limited numbers, surviving examples show the model’s remarkable sturdiness and the brand’s reputation for robust engineering.
This 1931 Hanomag 3/16 Coupe is now represented at no reserve by a Broad Arrow Specialist with a clean Florida title in the current owner's name.
