In 1962, Carroll Shelby—former chicken farmer, ex-Army Air Corps pilot, and 1959 Le Mans winner—created an automotive legend by merging the lightweight aluminum body of the British AC Ace with Ford’s 260-cubic-inch V8. Built in Los Angeles by Shelby-American Inc., the result was the iconic Shelby Cobra, a fusion of European agility and American muscle.

Due to the Cobra’s limited production, enthusiasts have long sought modern interpretations. One such tribute is the Backdraft RT4 Classic Edition, a contemporary roadster inspired by the original Cobra but enhanced with modern engineering. Built by Backdraft Racing, the RT4 features a stretched 92-inch wheelbase and a wider track for improved handling and comfort. Its suspension, adapted from BMW’s 2014 platform, includes MacPherson-style front struts and a multilink rear setup.

Built in 2020, this RT4 is finished in Indigo Blue with white Le Mans stripes and features 18-inch chrome wheels, stainless trim, and a race-style fuel filler. Power comes from a Prestige 427 V8 producing 500 horsepower, paired with ceramic-coated headers, polished side pipes, and a Tremec TKO 600 five-speed manual transmission. Inside, it boasts a full Caramel leather interior with diamond stitching on the center console and rear panel — the luxurious performance the original Shelby Cobras never had.
