Unveiled at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show, the 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 marked the 20th anniversary of Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT), which began with the 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra. 

At the time of introduction, the Ford Shelby GT500 was not only equipped with the highest-horsepower engine ever produced in North America to date, but it was also the car that would continue the partnership between the “Blue Oval” and automotive icon Carroll Shelby. Powered by a 5.8-liter supercharged V8, nearly every aspect of the engine was optimized for maximum power, including a new cross-drilled block and head, an all-forged engine rotating assembly, updated camshaft profiles, upgraded head gaskets, and a new carbon fiber driveshaft. 

The GT500’s design features a distinctive, aggressive look with a prominent grille, flared fenders, and a muscular rear. Inside, it offers Recaro seats and a modern instrument cluster with a TFT display. The Shelby’s suspension and Brembo brakes were factory upgraded to handle its increased power, making it 3.5 seconds faster on the Sebring International Raceway compared to its predecessor. 

Serving as the pinnacle of the fifth-generation Mustang hierarchy, just 4,885 Shelby GT500s were built in 2013. As Ford described it: “650 horsepower. Any questions?”
