In the late 2000s, AMG engineers and designers faced an unprecedented challenge: to create a modern incarnation of the iconic 300 SL “Gullwing” Coupe. The result was the SLS, or "Super Leicht Sport," the first Mercedes designed and built entirely by AMG. Unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt International Auto Show and designed by Mark Fetherston, the SLS featured the legendary gullwing doors paired with a muscular exterior design blending elegance and power seamlessly. Under the hood, a 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine producing 563 horsepower ensured exhilarating performance, while a dry-sump variant of the "M159" engine allowed for a low hood line and impressive weight distribution. Paired with a quick-shifting seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the SLS sprinted to 60 miles per hour in just 3.8 seconds, with a top speed of 196 miles per hour backed by six-piston aluminum brake calipers. The AMG Drive Unit allowed for selectable drive modes, working in harmony with the suspension and transmission to tailor driving characteristics according to the driver's preferences.
