Mercedes-Benz made a bold statement with the CL Coupe. Unveiled in 2006 as a flagship model, the CL was based on the S-Class — it rode on a 116-inch wheelbase and maintained the S-Class sedan’s intimidating presence, but also wore the styling of a performance coupe. Its curved, sweeping body was long at 201 inches, and conveyed both hot rod attitude and luxury aesthetics. Its low roofline met with windows that followed the roof’s contours, creating a bold silhouette. A prominent grille and deep fascia balanced the swept-back headlights up front, and a sloping trunk was framed by large taillights and quad exhaust tips in the rear.
The 2011 CL63 AMG Coupe was refreshed both visually and mechanically. In years past, AMG performance models had been powered by both supercharged and naturally aspirated mills, but the new CL63 AMG’s V8 wore twin turbochargers that helped it make 536 horsepower. And backed by a veritable tidal wave of torque, AMG Active Body Control suspension, and massive brakes controlling sticky tires, this 4,500-pound beast was brutal on the straights, and surgical in the curves.
Motor Trend tested it and concluded, “The engine is truly intoxicating, and it’s hard to believe that a vehicle this enormous and heavy can feel so nimble and stable, and be so utterly effortless to drive at triple digit speeds.”
This example of Mercedes-Benz’s innovative CL63 AMG is wearing Diamond White paint, with an exclusive Black/Anthracite leather interior.
