The Smart Fortwo arrived in the United States in 2008 as a radically efficient urban vehicle, demonstrating how intelligent engineering could maximize space within minimal dimensions.

Measuring just 106 inches long and weighing roughly 1,800 pounds, the two-seat fortwo packaged 45 cubic feet of passenger volume and 12 cubic feet of cargo space into a footprint roughly the size of a touring motorcycle. Its upright architecture delivered an impressive 40 inches of headroom and legroom, allowing even tall drivers to fit comfortably. And smart emphasized thoughtful design rather than extravagance, with a simple gauge cluster, durable materials, and distinctive controls that created a surprisingly refined feel for an entry-level car.

It was available in pure coupe, as well as uplevel Passion coupe and cabriolet versions. And providing the motivation was a rear-mounted, 1.0L inline 3-cylinder gasoline engine that sent 70 horsepower through a 5-speed automated manual transmission to the rear wheels.
