Launched in 2001 as a 2002 model, the VTX 1800 was part of Honda's VTX series, which stands for V-Twin Extreme. This series was inspired by the Zodia concept showcased at the 1995 Tokyo Motor Show. At its debut, the VTX 1800 boasted the largest displacement production V-twin engine in the world, with a 1,795cc liquid-cooled 52-degree V-twin engine. The upgraded engine of the 2004–2007 VTX 1800N produced 107 hp at 5,000 rpm and 120 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm.
One of the remarkable features of the VTX 1800N was its linked braking system where the hand brake operated two-thirds of the front pistons, while the foot brake controlled the remaining front pistons and all the rear pistons via a proportioning valve. This innovation contributed to improved braking performance and safety.
Despite being surpassed in engine size by the Kawasaki Vulcan 2000 in 2004, the VTX1800 and upgraded VTX 1800N remained popular due to its impressive acceleration. In a three-way road test Motorcycle Cruiser in 2004 concluded, “Three out of four testers chose the Honda VTX 1800N, hands down, as the ultimate Big Twin cruiser, and all three were the core testers who put the majority of mileage on these models.”
