Description
In 2007, Carroll Shelby’s legacy of high-performance pony cars gained a new chapter with the debut of the Mustang Shelby GT. Based on the fifth-generation Mustang GT, this model shared its DNA with the 2006 Hertz-exclusive GT-H. Each Shelby GT began as a standard GT built in Flat Rock, Michigan, before heading west to the Shelby facility in Las Vegas, Nevada, for a comprehensive transformation.
There, the car received a performance package that improved acceleration and handling, and gave it a unique and powerful look. Engine enhancements included a cold air intake, a high-flow exhaust system, and a recalibrated engine control unit, while the suspension got stiffer shocks and struts, upgraded stabilizer bars, and 1.5-inch-drop springs. Visually, the Shelby GT stood out with a choice of White or Black paint adorned with silver stripes, a brushed aluminum grille, a hood scoop, and 18-inch wheels.
Those changes combined to boost output by 19 horsepower over the base GT — however, thanks to an included 3.55 to 1 rear gear ratio, the seat-of-the-pants improvement was much greater. And with fewer than 6,000 units produced in its inaugural year, the 2007 Shelby GT wasn’t just fast, it was highly collectible as well.
