Description

The automotive world was astonished when General Motors green-lit production for Chevrolet’s outrageous roadster pickup SSR concept. Remaining close to its concept form, the production SSR boasted retro 1950s styling queues, muscular, bulging fenders, and most impressively, a power retractable hardtop. Initially powered by a 300 horsepower 5.3-liter V8, Chevrolet addressed calls for more power in 2005 by equipping the same 390 horsepower 6.0-liter LS2 V8 under the hood of the Corvette and Pontiac GTO. The new engine shaved 1.5 seconds off of the previous car’s 0-60 mph time and enabled the SSR to keep up with many sports cars of the day. Ceasing production after just four model years, the distinctly American convertible pickup is coveted today for its retro-hotrod looks, rumbling exhaust, and athletic handling that made it a smile inducing cruiser – especially with the top down.
