Description
Subaru’s involvement in rallying began in 1980, but it was the founding of STi in 1988 that made them competitive. Simply standing for Subaru Tecnica International, STi would be in charge of everything racing. Slowly making a name for themselves, the public began to yearn for a production variant of the race cars they saw racing across the desert, snow, and forest rally stages across the world. This demand was satisfied in 1992 with the Impreza WRX (World Rally eXperimental). The factory racing team would go on to win the World Rally Constructor's Championship in three years in a row from 1996, with two more driver's championships in 2001 and 2003, cementing Subaru’s legacy into the minds of enthusiasts for years to come.
The introduction of the WRX to the U.S. market was a strategic move by Subaru to capitalize on the growing popularity of performance-oriented compact cars. Inspired by their World Rally Championships, the 2002 WRX featured a turbocharged 2.0-liter flat-four engine, producing 227 horsepower and 217 lb-ft of torque. This powertrain, combined with Subaru's renowned all-wheel-drive Variable Torque Distribution system, provides legendary performance and handling.
