Description
“Born with the soul of a hot rod and the heart of a rebel” — Plymouth
The 1997 Plymouth Prowler was a bold and unconventional entry into the automotive world, designed to evoke the spirit of 1930s hot rods. Developed by Chrysler’s Pacifica Design Center, the Prowler was first introduced as a concept car in 1993 before entering limited production in 1997. Its unique design featured open front wheels, a pointed nose, and a retro-futuristic aluminum body.
Under the hood, the Prowler was powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 214 horsepower, paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. The car’s lightweight construction and rear-mounted transaxle delivered an enjoyable driving experience which Hot Rod’s September 1997 issue described as a “fun, tight, stable cruiser.”
The Prowler was also notable for its use of advanced materials and manufacturing techniques, including extensive use of extruded aluminum to reduce weight. Only 457 units were produced in 1997, and all were available in just one color: Prowler Purple Metallic.
This first-year Prowler also features Plymouth’s custom matching trailer — a welcome accessory due to the car’s small trunk — designed specifically to complement the Prowler’s unique styling, color, and matching wheels. The $5,075 trailer was manufactured by Ajax Trailers Inc. and using any other trailer could void the vehicle’s warranty.
