Description

It all started with a discussion on a cold February day in 1988. The legendary Bob Lutz, Chrysler’s President and Vice Chairman at the time, paid a visit to Tom Gale, the company’s Vice President of Design. Lutz owned a 1985 Autokraft MK IV Cobra replica and wondered why Chrysler couldn’t create something similar. After some sketches by Gale, the Cobra’s creator himself, Carroll Shelby, who was already a consultant for Chrysler, advised the team during Viper’s creation. When introduced at the Detroit auto show in 1989, “it blew the roof off,” said Lutz. 

Introduced in 1992, the updated 1996 version was called by Chrysler, “a new chapter in the legendary Viper story.” The 8.0-liter V10 engine was beefed up to 415 hp and 488 lb-ft of torque. Other significant changes included a removable hardtop and sliding side windows, the side exhausts moved to the rear, and the chassis stiffened for better handling.  

Carroll Shelby and Dan Fitzgerald, friends for more than 35 years, collaborated through Dan’s company Fitzgerald Motorsports to create the Carroll Shelby Limited Edition Viper Roadster. This 1996 Dodge Viper RT/10 Carroll Shelby Edition roadster is serial number 12 of a reported 19 examples produced, celebrating the Viper’s Carroll Shelby bloodline with enhanced performance and exclusive features. This is also one of only two examples finished in Viper GTS Blue with Stone White stripes.
