Description
The 1994 BMW 840Ci was part of the E31 8 Series, a line of luxury grand tourers that showcased BMW’s engineering prowess and design innovation. Introduced as a more affordable and more efficient alternative to the V12-powered 850i, the 840Ci retained the uplevel interior, a sleek, wedge-shaped body, and the pop-up headlights that defined the 8 Series — at $17,000 less than the V-12 850 models.
It featured a 4.0-liter, dual overhead cam V8 engine that produced 282 horsepower. When paired with a five-speed automatic transmission it offered refined operation, as well as improved fuel economy and reduced complexity over the V-12 versions. And combined with its MacPherson strut front/multilink rear suspension and four-wheel disc brakes, the V8’s surprisingly good midrange power kept it within striking distance of its V-12-powered siblings when the road got curvy.
Priced at around $68,000 when new, only 781 units were sold in the U.S. in 1994, making this red 840Ci a rare and desirable collector’s car today.

Carfax flagged a "Potential Odometer Rollback" on 20 July 2019 when Blaskin & Lane Tire in Calgary recorded 36,728 miles, while also recording 59,108 kilometers — the correct conversion if this U.S. odometer also showed kilometers. From 2014-2018, Canadian service records listed only kilometers (56,648 km on 30 May 2018), so Carfax flagged the difference when miles were recorded. However, there is no evidence of odometer rollback during the vehicle’s time in Canada.
