Trucks typically don’t outrun Ferraris — but the 1991 GMC Syclone did. And the story of how a gussied-up Sonoma managed to leave a blueblood supercar in the dust is one for the ages. Sport trucks were riding a wave of popularity in the 1980s, despite most just wearing appearance packages. But GMC wanted to carve out a performance niche, and it turned to specialty manufacturer Production Automotive Services (PAS) to make it happen.
PAS took production 4.3-liter V6s and modified them for big flow and turbo boost, then bolted the torquey, 280-horsepower engine to a four-speed automatic and all-wheel-drive system. That powerful powertrain sat in a lowered chassis, and the monochromatic Sonoma body wore an aggressive front air dam with fog lights, ground effects, and stylish wheels wearing sticky tires.
Under boost, the Syclone was a screamer — as Car and Driver can attest to when it tested one against a Ferrari 348ts. “Acceleration begins with such a jolt the driver feels his breakfast slosh rearward. In a blink, the Ferrari is looking at a tailgate. And the tailgate is getting smaller.”
This low-mileage example is one of only 2,995 Syclones ever built, and it has been carefully maintained and garage-kept for its next owner.

Ownership History
The accompanying CARFAX Vehicle History Report places this 1991 GMC Syclone in New York, Illinois, and since 2014, North Carolina. The consignor states, “This is a very good, well-cared for, and never raced 1991 GMC Syclone with 25,087 miles. Many Syclones were heavily modified, raced, and beaten up. It has been off the road and garage stored since 2015. Very nice original black paint with just a few dings. Cladding pieces are all original and in very good shape, and the interior is excellent. Just a few performance mods. Carfax may be incorrect as vehicle has been in North Carolina since 1999, when I purchased it.”
