By the 1980s, the Chrysler LeBaron had been refined time and time again, and represented the height of Chrysler’s effort to bring affordable luxury and open-air motoring to mainstream buyers. Built on Chrysler’s front-wheel-drive platform, the LeBaron helped revive interest in American convertibles at a time when many manufacturers had abandoned the body style, proving that stylish drop-tops could still be practical and attainable.

The LeBaron combined upscale styling, a comfortable interior, and optional turbocharged performance with a price that undercut many European luxury convertibles, making it genuine competitor. For 1988, the LeBaron continued as part of the J-body generation introduced for 1987, benefiting from Chrysler’s more aerodynamic redesign that replaced the boxier LeBarons of the early 1980s.
