Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
“The power of a turbo. The economy of a diesel.” The 1987 Mercedes-Benz 190D 2.5 Turbo was a landmark in the evolution of diesel-powered luxury sedans. Part of the W201 series — often referred to as the “Baby Benz” — this model introduced a turbocharged version of the OM602 five-cylinder diesel engine driving the rear wheels via an automatic transmission. It was designed to offer the legendary durability and fuel efficiency of Mercedes diesels with improved performance, making it more appealing to North American and European drivers accustomed to gasoline engines.
The 190D 2.5 Turbo also retained the W201’s hallmark build quality, safety features, and understated luxury. The turbocharged engine significantly reduced the sluggishness associated with earlier diesel models, offering a more responsive driving experience without sacrificing economy.
Produced until 1993, the 190D 2.5 Turbo was the only turbo diesel variant of the 190 series sold in North America, and only 20,915 were produced from 1989-1993. As Car and Driver reported in 1987, “While the 190D 2.5 Turbo won’t win any drag races, it’s a marvel of engineering. The turbocharged diesel engine offers a unique blend of economy and durability, wrapped in a chassis that feels more substantial than its size suggests.”
