The AW11-generation MR2 came to market in 1985 as Toyota's first mid-engine production car — a genuinely unusual proposition from a manufacturer better known for reliability than driving excitement. Developed with input from Lotus, the MR2's mid-engine layout gave it handling characteristics that belied its modest displacement, and its combination of a twin-cam four-cylinder and lightweight body made it one of the more rewarding driver's cars available at its price point in the mid-1980s.
