Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
“Wouldn’t you really rather have a Buick?” So asked the 1985 Buick Riviera brochure — and for good reason. The Riviera was Buick’s definitive take on the “personal luxury car,” a term often used loosely elsewhere but wholly appropriate here, where the concept was born and perfected.
In 1979, the sixth-generation Riviera transitioned to a front-wheel-drive platform shared with the Cadillac Eldorado and Oldsmobile Toronado. Though shorter in stature, the Riviera retained its signature spaciousness and luxury, offering amenities like electronic climate control and the rich tones of a Concert Sound six-speaker audio system. For those seeking open-air cruising, a convertible joined the traditional coupe for the first time.
Under the hood, most models were powered by a 5.0-liter V8 paired with a smooth-shifting four-speed automatic transmission. For the fuel-conscious, a diesel engine was available, while the performance-minded could opt for the sporting T-Type, equipped with a turbocharged V6.
Named Motor Trend’s Car of the Year in 1979, the sixth-generation Riviera remains the best-selling version of the nameplate — a stylish, comfortable reminder of an era when Buick’s badge meant elegance with a touch of attitude.
