Description

OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE

Founded in 1930, Carrozzeria Pininfarina has both designed and manufactured automobiles, most notably for Ferrari, but also Peugeot, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, even Cadillac. The Fiat 124 Sport Spider introduced in 1966 was a collaboration, the sports car designed and manufactured by the Pininfarina with final assembly by Fiat.

In 1982, Fiat ceased production of the 124 Spider, but Pininfarina saw potential in continuing the model. They took over production, rebranding the car as the Pininfarina Azzurra Spider for the North American market. This transition marked a significant shift, as the car was now produced entirely by Pininfarina, emphasizing higher quality and luxury.

The 1983 Azzurra Spider featured several improvements over its Fiat predecessor. It retained the classic design, but the interior was slightly revised with a new center stack, and the front brakes were increased in size. The Azzurra Spider is powered by Fiat’s 2.0-liter DOHC inline-four engine, designed by ex-Ferrari engineer Aurelio Lampredi. Malcom Bricklin handled importation and service in the U.S. market.

Despite its higher price point compared to the original Fiat model, production of the Azzurra Spider continued until 1985, having found a niche market among enthusiasts who appreciated its blend of Italian style and performance.
