Description

The Jeep CJ-8 Scrambler, built by American Motors Corporation (AMC) from 1981 to 1986, was a distinctive blend of Jeep toughness and pickup practicality. Introduced mid-year in 1981, the Scrambler was based on the CJ-7 platform, stretched to a 103.5-inch wheelbase to accommodate a compact pickup-style bed.

Designed with versatility in mind, the Scrambler appealed to a broad audience—from farmers and ranchers to weekend adventurers and daily drivers. With a payload capacity of 1,500 pounds, it was more than capable of handling work and play. Under the hood, buyers could choose from several engine options, including the 151 cu-in GM Iron Duke four-cylinder, AMC’s own 150 cu-in four-cylinder, or the robust 4.2-liter inline-six.

Though its production run was relatively short, with just 27,783 units built, the CJ-8 Scrambler left a lasting impression. It’s often seen as the spiritual predecessor to today’s Jeep Gladiator, carrying forward the legacy of combining off-road prowess with everyday utility.

This Scrambler was purchased by its current owner in 2015, and refurbishment work is said to have begun in 2018. During the refurbishment, the body was reportedly removed from the frame and refinished in its current shade of blue before being remounted. Power is now provided by a 350 cu-in V8 mated to a three-speed automatic transmission and Dana 300 transfer case.
