In 1979, the sixth-generation Buick Riviera joined forces with the Cadillac Eldorado and Oldsmobile Toronado in adopting shorter, front-wheel-drive platforms. Despite its smaller stature, the Riviera’s interior remained as luxurious and spacious as ever, with available electronic climate control and a Concert Sound six-speaker audio system. Power came from a standard 252 cu-in V6 beginning in 1981, while a V8 remained optional in the form of a 5.0-liter Oldsmobile-built unit. Named Motor Trend’s “Car of the Year” in 1979, the sixth-generation Riviera remains the best-selling iteration ever.
