Description

OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE

The beloved sports cars of the 1950s and '60s were slowly fading away as they were struggling to adapt to ever more stringent safety and emissions standards – that was until Mazda unveiled its new RX-7 in 1978. This affordably priced sports car offered the same excitement as the prior cars but came with a twist in the form of a Wenkel rotary engine. This power unit offered smooth running with limited moving parts, and thanks to its small packaging, it was placed low and far back in the chassis to create a front, mid-engine car with only minimal reduction to the passenger compartment. Thanks to this improved weight distribution, and well-engineered suspension, Mazda was able to create a well-handling car that still has a devout following today.

Highlights

  • Finished in Spark Yellow (YU) over a black leatherette interior

  • Powered by the '12A' two-rotor Wankel engine displacing 1.1-liters and producing 100-horsepower

  • Equipped with the five-speed, overdrive manual transmission

  • Well-optioned with the GS package, air conditioning, and stylized aluminum alloy wheels

  • Displaying just over 64,500 original miles at the time of cataloging

  • Accompanied by Mazda maintenance with entries dating back to 26 June 1981 with only 24,000 miles at the time

  • Recent service work from the last three years includes rebuilding the carburetor, servicing the ignition system, installing new Kuhmo tires, replacing the front wheel bearings, and other work to the suspension to recommission the car, with more information available in the gallery

  • A highly original example, with the only known modification being the addition of auxiliary fog lights

  • Voted as "the most significant import car for 1979" by the readers of Car and Driver magazine
