Description
“Grand Prix. The personal car with the luxury look.” The 1977 Pontiac Grand Prix marked the final year of the third-generation body style, which debuted in 1973. Known for its long hood, short deck, and personal luxury appeal, the 1977 model retained the bold styling cues that made the Grand Prix a standout in the mid-1970s. It featured a prominent vertical grille, hidden headlights, and a formal roofline, often with a vinyl top.
Under the lengthy hood, the Grand Prix offered a range of V8 engines, including the new standard 301 cubic-inch mill and 350, 400, and 455 options, depending on the trim and market. Along with the standard Grand Prix J trim, the SJ trim level placed “the emphasis on performance,” while the LJ trim put “the emphasis on luxury.”
The ’77 model year was also significant as it was the last before GM downsized its A- and G-body cars. As a result, the Grand Prix was the largest of its lineage, offering a plush ride and spacious interior. Sales remained strong, reflecting the model’s popularity among buyers seeking a blend of style, comfort, and performance.
