Description
OFFERED WITHOUT RESERVE
Huntsville, Alabama — or “Rocket City,” as we know it — is home to NASA rocket-propulsion research and development. Nothing quite encapsulates the launch and excitement of the region as this out-of-world collection of cars including movie cars and tributes, desirable classics, and a rocket truck itself. 3… 2… 1… These cars are ready for blastoff, and all will be launched to new homes and garages as all lots are presented with NO RESERVE. * * * Bill May’s Alfa Romeo Grand Prix Roadster replicar, built on a 1968 VW chassis, was assembled in 1970 as a prototype for a kit car line. This project aimed to create a series of kit cars that enthusiasts could build themselves, and May’s Weiffenback Kit Cars was even featured in a 1974 New York Times article. But success never fully materialized, with only five Alfa Romeo Grand Prix Roadsters ever produced by the company.
The replicar was designed to emulate the classic 1932-36 Alfa Romeo Tipo B P3 Grand Prix racer. The P3 made its winning debut at Monza, in the 1932 Italian Grand Prix. Tazio Nuvolari dominated the race, starting a long series of victories which were to make the P3 one of the most successful Alfas of all time. Enzo Ferrari and his Scuderia Ferrari campaigned these racers for Alfa Romeo. Only a handful were built, and one recently sold for $4,000,000.
The Weiffenback Kit Cars Alfa Romeo Grand Prix was designed to emulate the historic look of the historic Tipo B P3 but based on common Volkswagen Beetle chassis and powertrain. The fiberglass kit offered excellent handling and a wind-in-the-hair experience—without the million-dollar price tag.
