Description

Although officially called the Volkswagen Type 181, it quickly became affectionately known as the “Thing” in the US market. The Thing was designed as a low-cost, rugged, quarter-ton Jeep equivalent for the German military, but with increasing demand from the public for a go-anywhere vehicle, Volkswagen produced a civilian version. This version was aimed at competing against the Citroën Méhari and the Fiat Jolly as a fun-loving vehicle that could be enjoyed at the beach or in the mountains. Utilizing a modified Karmann Ghia chassis and Beetle drivetrain meant that access to the prolific Volkswagen dealership network for convenient service would never be far away. These simple underpinnings also allowed for modifications, creating a unique offering, such as this 1974 example.

Highlights

  • Modified into a six-door, six-seat limousine in 2016

  • Built by stretching the chassis of one 1974 “Thing” and using parts from a donor car to give a factory appearance

  • Powered by a 2,276 cc flat-four that was built by Buggy Works of Santee, California, in January 2016

  • Equipped with an automatic transmission

  • Finished in white over a black vinyl interior

  • Black carpeted floors contrast the four-spoke wood steering wheel with a Volkswagen badge in the center

  • A padded roll bar has been added over the rear rows of seats supporting the fabric roof

  • Upgraded radio with a Fusion AM/FM unit featuring Sirus XM and iPod connectivity

  • Please note that while the odometer displays just over 1,400 miles, the true mileage is unknown
