Description

While it was officially called the Volkswagen Type 181, it became affectionately known as the ‘Thing’ in the US market. It was designed as a low-cost, rugged, quarter-ton Jeep equivalent for the German military, but with increasing demand from the public for a go-anywhere vehicle, Volkswagen produced a civilian version. This version was aimed at competing against the Citroën Méhari and the Fiat Jolly as a fun-loving vehicle that could be enjoyed at the beach or in the mountains. Utilizing a modified Karmann Ghia Chassis and Beetle drive train meant that access to the prolific Volkswagen dealership network for easy service would never be far away.
