Description

The Volkswagen Type 181 was affectionately known as the ‘Thing’ in the US market. Initially, the car was designed to be the equivalent of a German-made Jeep, a low-cost, rugged quarter-ton vehicle that would go just about anywhere. The passenger car was aimed at competing against the Citroën Méhari and the Fiat Jolly as it was intended to be used as a fun-loving vehicle ideally suited for use at the beach or in the mountains. Based on the Beetle drive train and a modified Karmann Ghia chassis, the simple underpinnings paired with the prolific Volkswagen dealer network meant that if service was needed, it would never be far away.
